As CD sales decrease and digital music downloads rise in popularity, the timing is perfect for underground indie electronic artists to step up and swarm the iPod nation.
The following indie electronic artists are at the forefront of electronica 2.0, embracing styles that range from house, to trance, to IDM, progressive electronica, drum N bass, and beyond. The best part? When you finish this article, you can check each of them out on MySpace for a little good old-fashion instant gratification.
Indie Electronic Artists #1: DJ Kenneth A
The roar of Baltimore, DJ Kenneth A can shake a dancefloor with nu skool breakbeat mix or, better yet, switch gears and drop is own work. Fans of Moby, Hybrid, and early BT will find DJ Kenneth A's production work right on par. And his occasional forays into symphonic electronic music showcases this indie electronic artist's sense of melody every bit as much as his beat work shows off an uncanny ability to bring the biggest drops along the East Coast.
Indie Electronic Artists #2: Bexarametric
Raised on a steady diet of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, Roni Size, and Radiohead, straight from Dallas, Bexarametric's music is a head trip of massive proportions. As much damage as his brand of IDM does to the synapses, however, it's his ability to wreck a dancefloor that is unparalleled among young indie electronic artists. He doesn't just blow it up, he leaves it a smoldering pile of rubble, more reminiscent of a war zone than a dance club. And, yes, that's a good thing. Bexarametric is not for the weak of heart, and he probably likes it that way.
Indie Electronic Artists #3: Vernixx
A percussionist at heart, Vernixx has been banging in the heart of Oklahoma for years. His unique style of deep house pushes mucho air through any PA, while still saying true to the essence of house music. Expertly placed hand percussion, hypnotic progressions, and just enough edge to cut through any crowd, Vernixx brings a commitment to the music and production that make him a house music purist in every sense of the term.
Indie Electronic Artists #4: Mellow Jeremy
To categorize Mellow Jeremy would be unjust. While there is a hint of Detroit Techno that runs through most of his work, his ability to weave in funky breaks, drum n bass, acid house, and more allows him to create a swirling mix of progressive electronic music that is so dizzyingly good, that when it stops, the silence that remains is like a vacuum. And that doesn't suck in the least.
